Why is Teflon™ Coating so important in Chemical Processing Industry?

Teflon™ fluoropolymer coatings applied on industrial products have become a crucial material for engineers in chemical industry. In contrast to metals, products manufactured with Teflon™ absorb varying quantities of the materials they are in contact with, protecting it from many irritate reactions. Chemical, temperature and corrosion resistance are not the only properties important in chemical processing industry.

Teflon™ fluoropolymer coatings applied on industrial products have become a crucial material for engineers in chemical industry, thanks to these unique properties:

  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • High corrosion resistance
  • High temperature resistance

Teflon™ fluoropolymer coatings are essentially chemically inert. It has the range of temperature resistance from -270  C to 260 C. In contrast to metals, products manufactured with Teflon™ absorb varying quantities of the materials they are in contact with, protecting it from many irritate reactions.

In chemical processing for example, steam altered with low pressure cold water will cause severe thermal and pressure fluctuations. Steam will create a pressure and temperature gradient through the coating, causing absorption of a small quantity of steam which condenses to water between the coating and the metal. The repeated pressure and thermal cycling can ultimately cause water-filled blister. In this case the chemical barrier provided by Teflon™ coating is still intact, however this effect will not be seen in metals because metals fail mainly in corrosion. Most plastics or elastomers will also result the same, because temperature boiling point of liquid chemicals are normally beyond its capabilities.

Chemical, temperature and corrosion resistance are not the only properties important in chemical processing industry. Other unique properties of Teflon™ have also proven to create a high value usage, such as:

  • Non-stick properties
  • Low coefficient of friction
  • Non-conductive properties
